Another Way Home Chicory Inn #3 by Deborah Raney

So, no enraged Herod afterwards, no massacre of the innocents, and no escape to Egypt. An enchanting telling of the story of the 3 wise men and the baby Jesus. "Home by Another Way" tells the story of the three wise men and how they found Baby Jesus. It tells of their visit with King Herod whom they met with on their journey to see Baby Jesus, and how they knew to avoid seeing King Herod again after discovering the best news in the world. I especially like the picture of the magi admiring and holding the baby.

She's promiscuous, vindictive, and angry, but also vulnerable and caring. The book didn't end like I expected, and I was glad because it made it more believable. For anyone who is interested in a book about the First Christmas, this is NOT IT! The author has taken liberties with the biblical account of the birth of Jesus that are so fictionalized that it would make a child confused as to the real facts of the story. As I read it, I was constantly ticking off points to myself saying, “Nope, that’s wrong, no, no, no, “ etc... It is one thing to modernize a famous fairy tale, but this is the BIBLE!

The colloquial tone of the lengthy text—"But sure, why not?"—seems to be an attempt to make the story relevant; its success will vary from reader to reader. Truly lovely illustrations in soft tones capture the reverent atmosphere and the sense of an ancient time and place that the tongue-in-cheek text seems to reject. The Wise Men are diverse, and the other people have skin tones in varying shades of brown. The third book of Deborah Raney’s Chicory Inn series, Another Way Home revisits the now familiar and well-loved Whitman family, and I loved it.

(The book did not display properly on my updated Mac, but was fully displayed on my old iPad.) I found myself reading scripture after reading this slightly different version of the Three Wise Men. According to some legends, they were possibly from three different locations, but it is not specified in the Bible. The idea of them each receiving the star light separately is intriguing.

Dani, a senator's daughter, and Austin a convict's son both need to find housing and come to grips with their past misconceptions. Relatable characters, twist and turn plot, and a believable resolution makes for a stand alone page turner. I received this book as a gift but the opinion expressed in this review is my true opinion. I both enjoyed and did not enjoy this book at the same time. I didn't care for the author's writing style, and yet she's a superb storyteller.

My mother is such a huge fan of hers and continues to send me copies of her books. While Taylor has such a command of the English language, her command of the duty of preaching -- calling people to faith in Christ -- remains suspect. Home by Another Way is Barbara Brown Taylor’s interpretation of one of the most well-known Bible events, the journey of the wisemen. She has taken the short Biblical narrative from Matthew fleshing it out with feeling and emotion.

While it is faithful to the story outline the author has allowed imagination to weave an enchanting account of their visit, following the star. "In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage." Let us know what’s wrong with this preview of Home by Another Way by Barbara Brown Taylor. This is the third book in the Chicory Inn Series.

I will definitely add this book to our Church Library as well as my family Christmas library. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley. DEBORAH RANEY's first novel, A Vow to Cherish, inspired the World Wide Pictures film of the same title and launched Deb’s writing career.

They may even see a bit of themselves in Sarah’s journey, like I did. I loved her writing style & the story line was very intriguing. Soon I could see and feel the individuals who people this story.

At times you can almost feel the pain of the characters as they struggle with some very serious issues. For those who have faced infertility as Danae and Dallas have, the story will hit very close to home. For the rest of us, it shares some insights that we may have never considered.

The way Danae had to cope with her sisters when they got pregnant/when she saw their children made me want to give her a hug. I remember feeling for Danae after reading Two Roads Home, the second Chicory Inn novel. I was happy to see that this story would focus on her issue. I understood how she felt towards her sisters and how she felt towards God at times. These are two believable characters dealing with their feelings and their situation in a realistic way. In a series of reflections on scripture, she considers the startling reality of what it means to be the people of God.

I recommend it to anyone looking for some light escapism. Will want to remember this book next December. Wonderful children's book about the wise men who visited the child Jesus. Thank you #Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
